A group of friends has persuaded firms to donate 25 tonnes of food, which they then passed on to community groups.
Calling themselves the Kindness Offensive, the north London-based group spent a day handing out goods such as sweetcorn, fajitas and pancake mix.
Member James Hunter said: “It really makes us smile helping people.”
Doreen Gordon, from the African Caribbean Association, said: “It’s good to know that there is someone out there who is really concerned about others.”
Group members, who also work as musicians and events organisers, store the goods at their West Hampstead base before distributing them by van.
They have previously handed out free theatre tickets, kitchen equipment and guitars.
Their latest recipients included Women Asylum Seekers Together, whose spokeswoman Yeukai Taruvinga said: “It’s a good idea because obviously they are going to help our women who cannot afford to buy basic food.”
Mr Hunter said he hoped they would encourage others to treat each other with kindness.
“The more good we can do for people, the better we feel. I guess that’s what we get out of it.”
He said the Kindness Offensive was now planning a bigger giveaway.
